Diamond Shruumz edibles linked to seizures, nausea. Here's where they were sold in Florida (2024)

As of Monday, July 29, 78 people in 28 states, including Florida, have gotten sick after consuming Diamond Shruumz microdose chocolate bars, cones and gummies, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in a release. Of those, 65 have reportedly sought medical care, 40 have been hospitalized, and there are two deaths potentially connected.

One of the people who got sick was in Florida. The investigation by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not released where the possibly-connected deaths occurred.

Thecompany initially recallednearly two dozen varieties of its products due to toxic levels of a chemical called muscimol found in certain mushrooms that could potentially be the cause.

"Reported symptoms have included those linked to seizures, agitation, involuntary muscle contractions, loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness, nausea and vomiting, abnormal heart rates, and hyper/hypotension," the parent company, Prophet Premium Blends,said in a release.

All of the Diamond Shruumz products have been recalled but some retailers may still have some for sale, the FDA said.

"Consumers should not purchase any Diamond Shruumz-brand products," the FDA said in a release. Below is a list of 53 Florida retailers that carried the products.

What is muscimol?

Muscimol is a psychoactive compound found in certain mushrooms of the genus Amanita. Previously used as a sedative and an anti-emetic, muscimol has been tested for therapeutic uses in pain management, migraine treatment, seizure reduction, and in trials studying the treatment of epilepsy and Parkinson's Disease, according to theNational Library of Medicine.

However, the CDC has reported that muscimol can cause central nervous system depression andan overdose in 2018resulted in "altered mental status, vomiting, diarrhea, incontinence, sweating, swelling of the lip and tongue, and excessive salivation."

What are the symptoms people are reporting after eating Diamond Shruumz products?

Patients have reported the following symptoms, according to the CDC:

• Seizures

• Decreased level of consciousness

• Respiratory failure
