How much evidence is needed in a Dbq? ›

Evidence: You must address the content of at least 3 docs to get 1 point. You must use the content of at least 6 docs to support your argument (thesis) to get 2 points. Include one outside example (something not included in the docs) to strengthen your argument for 1 additional point.

To achieve a 5, you should aim to answer at least 70-75% of the MCQs correctly, provide strong responses to the SAQs, write a well-structured and evidence-based DBQ, and deliver a coherent LEQ with strong arguments.

You can earn 1 point for using content from at least 4 documents to support an argument. You can earn up to 2 points for outside evidence used to support an argument (NEW - 1 point for each piece, up to 2 pieces of outside evidence.)

Determine how many documents will be used in creating an original DBQ, most teachers recommend between 6-9 documents in a DBQ.

Take a look at the DBQ essay prompt one more time, and use that to formulate your introductory paragraph. Go for the 5-paragraph rule here: 1 opening paragraph, 3 body paragraphs and 1 closing paragraph. A quality essay requires at least 3 body paragraphs to persuasively support your point of view.

If you have 45 minutes to write, take about 5 minutes to make an outline. If you have an introduction, 3 main points that cite 6 documents, and a conclusion, plan on spending 7 minutes or less on each of these 5 sections. That will leave you 5 minutes to proofread or to serve as a buffer in case you need more time.
